Symm copy command

Hi 🙂

Some times your model has grown so much in polygon count that every performance help you can give it matters but you are not willing to loose the advantage of symmetry, or perhaps you want to enforce symmetricity after several, non symmetric sculpting transformations, among others, that seems the perfect use case for the “Symm copy” command.
Previously it only handles voxel models, so any surface feature will get re-sampled and of course, your LC fine details will get lost, so we have revamped to allow full operation in every mode and few optimizations too.

Unlimited Clay

Hi everyone 🙂

Some time ago I was working on an Unlimited Clay paper to explain some basic principles since in my research for implementing dynamic subdivision sculpting all the existent papers seems quite obscure to me at that time (plus a slow internet connection =  EPIC FAIL :P), I even dare to send it for SIGGRAPH 2011 where it got reduced to ashes by the review experts board 😛 (even ignoring Ton’s advices regarding that, he warn me that they will be heartless with the papers :D) but in the end, yes, they where right, I was quite naive and inexperienced in theoretical development, I prefer to jump and code and that actual working software speaks for itself, but what doesn’t kill you, make you stronger, as a saying said. I don’t have any problems in recognize my own mistakes 😉

But since recently Nicholas Bishop is taking great steps toward implementing dynamic topology sculpting in Blender I think is a good time to blow the dust of that paper because it still have some value in explaining few tricks of how dynamic subdivision sculpting works and hopefully can help to ease the way I have to walk by trial and error before.

Also I want to point out once more time that here in 3DC the team really appreciate the Blender development efforts and we admire it,  Andrew is one of the most amazing persons I have met, aside from his lightning fast  intelligence (that is my model to follow :)) he has one of the most altruist personality I have seen, he have a lot of things in common with Ton, I surely can said that if half of the enterprise owners out there where like them, this world would be a much better place. I would like to recognize the incredible effort the Blendiac family has made to format and upload the paper for me at that time.  I’m very thankful for all the wonderful people the Lord has put in my life.

El tiempo se me escapa…

Este post no es en ingles, no es un post tecnico y ni siquiera tiene que ver con el tema central de este blog, aunque me preguntaria cual es el tema central, mi trabajo o yo? Traducirlo implicaria pensar detalladamente y analizar lo que estoy escribiendo y hoy sencillamente quiero que mis ideas fluyan. Esta noche es una de esas, donde me siento viejo, en el sentido de que recordar el pasado me duele y me da envidia a la vez, no porque mi presente sea peor (mas bien al contrario) sino porque añoro esa inocencia infantil que dia a dia me aferro a no perder y se deshace entre mis manos.
Mi vida ha sido una busqueda constante de mi mismo y he podido respirar esos instantes en que la veo cambiar ante mis ojos, en que puedo decir con precision cientifica que un segundo atras era otro, pero me duele saber que en cada transformacion aunque gano mucho, tambien pierdo demasiado.
Y otras veces como el despistado sencillamete me hallo tan sumergido en el quehacer diario que cuando levanto la vista mi mundo cambio tanto que no se donde fue que gire el camino.

Extraño cuando era un niño y todo me parecia fascinante , a pesar de que el mundo se derrumbaba ante mis ojos en la terrible crisis de los noventa en mi pais, pero mis abnegados padres supieron soportar sobre sus espaldas todo el dolor y la miseria para que un pedazo de ese cielo que se rompia no nos aplastara a mi hermana y a mi. Extraño a mis padres, a esos idolos fuertes que veia yo eternos y que despues los rebeldes años hormonales de la adolescencia me hicieron tratar de desprenderme de ellos en todos los planos, para, despues que las aguas de la edad tomaron un cauce mas tranquilo, realmente ver en ellos lo grandes que son y con dolor darme cuenta de lo viejitos que se me han hecho.
Extraño a mi hermana, mi compañera de infacia todo lo que cinco años de diferencia pudo permitirme, y que despues sufri enormemente cuando senti que se hacia grande y ya no podia jugar con su hermanito, para despues tambien convertirme en su opuesto, tal vez por ese viejo rencor que guarde de niño y finalmente volver a recuperar ese cariño que solo la ausencia sabe desempolvar. A mi pequeño sobrino, que olvidando que yo tambien fui un niño y como es ser un pequeñin solo, no le supe dedicar todo el tiempo que el se merecia. A tantos y tantos amigos que a lo largo de mi vida hemos compartido y que ya seguimos caminos diferentes. Lo magico de esos momentos es que todo parece eterno, la linealidad de la mente humana que se quiere afferrar a esos instantes es incapaz de aceptar su naturaleza efimera. Extraño tanto sentimiento derramado por mis primeras pasiones, mis primeros amores platonicos pero no por irreales menos bellos.
En cada momento de mi vida entrego tanto que pasar al siguiente es realmente una experiencia desgarradora, donde me tengo que inventar nuevamente, y en momentos como este, siento que cada vez tengo menos fuerza y menos deseos para comenzar de nuevo.

LiveClay improvements

Good news, more LC stabilization and improvements! (Ok still we don’t get out of beta so don’t open your vintage wine bottles yet :P) but I think is worth to let you know, we have improved a lot the symmetric behavior of many tools and we have made a good revamp of the SnakeClay tool, now you can use a new feature with it: Lazy topology cleaning, just like what I have shown for the Move tool, at the end of the stroke this tool will try to reduce as much stretching as it can, maintaining the shape 🙂 and also very important improvements in the internal engine of that tool have been made, we can say now that 3DCoat has one of the most advanced Snake-like tool out there 😛

Also notice in the video how many LC tools have two new GUI option to activate the Merge&Repel feature in Real time or don’t use it at all. More advances will follow soon 😉

Flatten tool, as well as Move tool can be greatly benefited from LC features, and it has been requested too, soon we plan to address many of the remaining issues in LC (though recently many stabilization steps have been accomplished) so we will make a LC update soon and you may enjoy this new features too 😉

Close Holes command

There are lots of approaches to cap the holes of your imported models or accidentally broken models, most of them can be classified in two groups: reconstructive and tessellation , reconstructive tries to “guess” what was the shape and curvature of the missing parts, while tessellation based methods just cap the hole. this has its advantages, many tools need perfectly closed models to perform operations on them and also, 3D Coat already has with LiveClay an extensive set of tools to beautify/change and improve topology so we just need to cap those holes in models. While in Voxel mode there’s such an option, is not surface based and the results is quite destructive for imported models, so thanks to LC algorithms we have implemented a Close Holes command that you can enjoy soon 😉

Clean Mesh command

Hi

Currently is a bit slow for my taste but there’s lot of room for performance improvement, here’s a preview of the Clean Mesh command, very useful to get with one click a clean topology coming from Marching Cubes or any other transformation , it preserves the shape as much as it can, is like a one stroke TSmooth applied to the whole mesh without smoothing 😉
